What a band name really looks like
We analysed the names of 15,166 notable bands and 102,436 solo artists on Wikidata: acts with a MusicBrainz ID and articles in at least four Wikipedia languages. Here's what they have in common, and what that means for naming yours.
47%
of notable bands use a single word. Another 34% use two. Only 19% use three or more.
10%
start with "The". The classic shape is far rarer than its reputation, which is one reason a good "The ___s" name still stands out.
10
characters is the median length of a notable band name, comfortably inside X's 15-character handle limit.

Which letters band names start with
Ignoring a leading "The".
What this means for your name
- Short wins, but single words are crowded. Most notable bands use one or two words, which is exactly why so many single words are already taken. An invented word or an unusual pairing gets you the brevity without the crowd.
- "The" is a choice, not a default. Under one in ten notable bands use it today; when it fits your scene (garage, punk, indie), it still reads as classic.
- Your genre has a dialect. Compare your scene's row with the overall numbers and decide whether to follow the dialect or stand out from it.
How we built this
Source: Wikidata items with a MusicBrainz artist ID (P434) and 4+ Wikipedia sitelinks, queried on 2026-10-19. "Bands" are non-person items with at least one genre, excluding classical ensembles and orchestras; genres come from Wikidata's genre property (P136); formation year from inception (P571). English labels as written on Wikidata.
Limits: notable acts skew toward English-language, Western and older bands; genre tagging is uneven; small and local bands aren't included. Treat percentages as descriptive of famous acts, not all bands. You may reuse these figures with a link to this page (CC BY 4.0).
