Alt-rock band name generator

Alternative rock names grew up in college radio and record-store bins, where a slightly oblique name was a signal: this band is not trying to be on the radio (even when it is). Think of names that sound like a half-remembered phrase or two words that should not go together.

How alternative bands name themselves

The generator leans on city imagery, memory and feeling, with odd noun pairings, single uncommon words and short phrase names.

Patterns you'll see

  • Oblique pairing. Pixies, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins: an everyday word knocked sideways by its partner.
  • Single uncommon word. Garbage, Interpol, Placebo. A real word used out of context becomes a brand.
  • Borrowed phrase. Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse both came from existing texts. Our phrase names are original, but the feeling of a fragment is the point.

Tips

  • If a name makes people ask "why that?", you have a story for interviews.
  • Keep it under 15 characters if you can, so the handle fits on X.
  • One strange word plus one ordinary one is the sweet spot.

Avoid: Avoid names that only work in writing, such as puns that need to be seen to be understood. Alternative bands are introduced on podcasts and radio.

Alternative naming questions

How is an alt-rock name different from a rock name?

Rock names favour power and motion; alternative names favour ambiguity and texture. "Iron Highway" is rock; "Paper Monsoon" is alt.

Can I use a quote or book title as a band name?

Titles and short phrases are generally not protected by copyright, but trademarks and famous phrases can still cause trouble. Check, and prefer original phrasing.
